Fire: 4x 5/1, 2x 4/2, 1x 4/1, 1x 3/3, 1x 2/3, 1x 1/4
I've always felt the 3/2 card was out of place in the Red deck, but I understand the "bridge effect" of having a card with an attack value of 3 rather than skipping from 4 to 2. The 4/2 already bridges D1 to D2, so the alteration to 3/3 is a natural one.
Earth: 2x 4/2, 2x 4/1, 2x 3/3, 2x 2/4, 1x 1/4, 1x 1/5
This is now in balance with the others as far as 5- and 6-valued cards go. The expected play value of the deck remains unchanged, as the 4/2's are more than likely to be used as attacks just like the 4/1's.
Water: 2x 5/1, 2x 4/2, 1x 4/1, 2x 3/3, 1x 2/3, 2x 1/4
Yep, it's just the standard Blue. The temptation is strong to somehow make one of the 5-valued cards into a 6-valued so that all three have seven 6-valued cards, but there isn't a good candidate for change.
Avatar: 2x 5/1, 1x 4/2, 1x 4/1, 2x 3/3, 1x 2/3, 2x 1/4, 1x 1/5
Takes 3 cards from each other element -- attack, defend, and middle
fire: 5/1 1/4 4/1
water: 5/1 1/4 3/3
earth: 4/2 1/5 3/3
Then the 2/3 is added as a bridge.
non-bender: 3x 4/1, 3x 3/2, 2x 2/3, 2x 1/4
Based off the Yellow (non-Force-using) deck, it gets rid of all the worthless 4-valued cards.
Sage: 1x 4/2, 2x 4/1, 2x 3/3, 1x 2/3, 1x 2/4, 2x 1/4
Despite being a Firebender, Iroh has studied all the elements and incorporated techniques from each, focusing on defense rather than the traditional offense of Firebending.
strong ranged: 2x 4/1 2x 3/1, 1x 3/2, 2x 2/3, 2x 1/4
direct from SWED
weak ranged: 2x 3/1, 3x 2/1, 4x 1/2
ditto
strong melee: 1x 5/1, 2x 4/2, 1x 3/2, 2x 3/3, 1x 2/3, 2x 1/4
standard custom (I think)

Re: The Avatar Set Basic Decks
I like that name for Iroh's deck, good choice. I'm also a big fan of the non-bender (formerly Goldenrod) deck. Sign me up for making that the new Yellow.
So hypothetically, what would the Air deck look like?

Re: The Avatar Set Basic Decks
My thought on the air deck was rather unorthodox -- the utilitarian nature of Airbending led me in this direction:
2x 4/2, 1x 4/1, 4x 3/3, 2x 2/4, 1x 1/4
Though representative of Airbending, it's not a particularly exciting (or even viable) basic deck. I was more than happy to be able to create the Avatar deck instead, thus avoiding the prospect entirely.
Re: The Avatar Set Basic Decks
A quick comment about the basics, I think there is a misprint in the Water deck. You've said it is the standard Blue deck, but I think one of the 4/2s should be changed to a 4/1.
As for the standard melee custom, there isn't one. Some advocate the 'removing of the top card of a major' premise, while others cling to the older custom set that was made on the old yahoo group. Either is fine IMO, but at this point, neither is standard.

Re: The Avatar Set Basic Decks
Not a misprint but a typo, thanks for catching that. The .pdf's and VASSAL extension have it correctly, but where it said "1x 4/2" it should have been "1x 4/1" (since the 4/2's were covered immediately before).
